Public T-Shirt Works
This performance piece was done in the San Jose State Art department pavilion, and allowed me to sew shirts for a day in the hot sun. It was done as a means of draw attention to the injustices that exist with many produced goods. I hoped to specifically bring attention to sweatshops in Asia, Central, and South America, and other countries with large textile industries. This process was chosen because it put me in an uncomfortable setting and I hoped to mimic on some level the poor working conditions and long hours that many workers face in the sweatshop industries.

Silicosis Americana
Fired and unfired Porcelain, wood, iron oxide
Piece about the problems associated with the denim industry. Many workers around the world in denim factories are diagnosed or die from Silicosis. This is due to the sandblasting practices used by many denim manufacturers, and the lack of safety equipment and information issued to workers. SIlicosis is caused by exposure to silica dust, damaging the lungs ability to filter air into the body. Silca dust is a hazard in the textile industry because of the amount of it found in the dust from sandblasting, it is also a concern for the ceramics industry and it is present in dry clay. By creating pieces of unfired clay in this piece, the work speaks to the dangers faced by employes of this industry, and the high moral cost for cheap marketable textiles.
