Sedan Chair
2016- steel, wood, textile, paint.
A modern take on a historical mode of transportation used in Europe and around the globe. This piece speaks to dutch colonialism in Asia, specifically Indonesia. The vessel is modeled after american hot rods and is painted in a style reminiscent of hot rod, and lowrider car styling. However, the motifs and colors hearken back to the Dutch tradition of Delft Blue, a famously dutch form of pottery that mimics a much older tradition of pottery in Asia and China. The interior is adorned with woven bamboo, an upholstered seat made from Batik, a traditional Indonesian textile, and has a Indonesian mask, a symbol of culture and tradition. It is by placing the culture of the colonized inside the sedan chair, that the importance of carrying and exploiting a people is explored.
